B1/B2 Visitors' visas

Overview

B-1 Visa

If you are planning a business-related travel to the U.S., on a temporary basis, then the B-1 visitor's visa would be the one for you. The following are some of the business reasons to travel to the U.S. recognized  by the Department of State:

  • You are traveling to the U.S. as an athlete or some other type of professional
  • You are seeking a business venture as an investor
  • You are traveling to the U.S. for a conference, meeting, trade show, or to attend a business event
  • You need to enter the U.S. as a lecturer or speaker for an event
  • You are performing research for your company
  • You are trying to market your product to consumers in the U.S.
  • You are entering the U.S. for a training required by your employer

If you state any of these reasons for traveling to the U.S., the Department of State require evidence certain evidence to show that your stay will be temporary. Most of these require that you will not be receiving a salary of income from any company in the U.S. See the DOS's publication on Business Travel to the United States for more information on the type of evidence that is required.

B-2 Visa

The Department of State has recognized the following reasons as appropriate reasons for obtaining the B-2 visa for traveling to the U.S.:

  • As a tourist
  • For a vacation
  • To visit with friends or relatives
  • To obtain medical treatment
  • To participate in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
  • To participate in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
  • In order to enroll in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

You may also seek to enter the U.S. for both business and pleasure purposes. In that case, you would apply for the combined B1/B2 visa.

Visa Waiver Program

Visitors from certain countries may be able to enter the U.S. for business or tourism purposes without a visa. It must be for one of the purposes permitted under the B visas. Travelers seeking to enter under this program must first obtain approval from the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). To see if your country is one of the countries current under the VWP program, see Citizen or National of VWP Designated Country.
